For plasma formation, a sufficiently high electrical DC voltage is applied between two electrodes. With a suitable combination of voltage, electrode gap and gas pressure, flashover occurs and a discharge is ignited between the electrodes. In this case, a plasma is formed, which also enables the current flow of the discharge. If the current flow is sufficiently high, the electrodes heat up and the electron discharge is facilitated, an arc is formed. Arcs are exploited in electric welding, melting and arc lamps.
